Westminster’s 12-mile Big Dry Creek Trail, is just steps from the hotel and popular with hikers as well as cyclists, skaters, bird watchers and equestrians. There are also a variety of trails in nearby Boulder where you can enjoy easy to moderate hikes and beautiful views. The Royal Arch is relatively short, but strenuous. If you prefer a longer hike, the Shadow Canyon is ideal, and filled with huge boulders, lush foliage and lots of ferns.
If you are a fly fishing enthusiast, you will appreciate Boulder Creek, Big Thompson and the Blue River, where you can catch Colorado’s famous trout. If you’re new to the sport, or don’t feel like venturing out on your own, you’ll find several fly fishing companies in the area with professional guides, as well as bait shops and sporting goods stores with everything you need for your fly fishing adventure.
The Rocky Mountain National Park is great for viewing wild animals, especially the big ones. There are nearly 60 species of mammals, as well as 280 recorded bird species in the park. Use binoculars to watch elk feed in the meadows or spot golden eagles as they fly around the Trail Ridge Road. You can also watch bats feed over lakes and ponds at dawn.
There are several stables near our Westminster hotel that offer trail rides and horseback riding lessons, including the Wild West Ranch in nearby Aravada and the Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides in Boulder. If you’re traveling to Rocky Mountain National Park, check out Glacier Creek Stables or Moraine Park Stables, and enjoy a guided horseback riding tour while taking in the beauty of the Rockies.
Standley Lake Regional Park offers a variety of boating opportunities, including canoe, kayak, and even stand-up paddle board rentals. You can rent by the hour or purchase a daily pass for $15. Located just 25 minutes away, the Boulder Reservoir is also ideal for kayaking and canoeing, especially if you are looking for a gentle experience. It’s a great activity that the whole family can enjoy together.
Over 5,000 animals call this family-friendly attraction home. Discover 1,600 butterflies in the tropical forest, tour the garden and walk through the nature trail to see critters of all kinds. There is a lot to see and learn here.
